Deco Disco!

I have something very special to share with you on the blog today, a few months back Joanne Truby Floral Design had the pleasure of working with this incredibly talented team; Make up & co-ordination by Lucy Oldham Blush Makeup, Photography by Rebecca Douglas, Styling by Bellaboo and Beau, Dress from Frou Frou Bridal Boutique, Cakes by Vintage Rose Cupcakes and of course flowers by us, on a rather fantastic styled shoot held at The Bell in Ticehurst .

Think neon, glitz and 1920’s glamour all mixed together to create something truly original.  The idea behind the shoot was to show a slightly different slant on the vintage trend coming away from using pastel colour combinations. We wanted to give couples inspiration of how a wedding can look if you decide to encompass a theme using bright colours. Being the time of year and thinking ahead to the festivities of Christmas we also felt it would be fun to pair the pops of colour with glitz. So Without further ado,  I bring you our Deco Disco styled shoot as featured recently on Whimsical Wonderland Weddings!

I love, love, love this image taken by the talented Rebecca Douglas. It has a real 1920’s cinematic feel to it don’t you think? The flower crown we designed was made up of pink spray Roses, Clematis, Craspedia, orange Ranunculus, Scabiosa heads, and berried eucalyptus sprayed gold. The colours compliment the glitzy curtain made by Bellaboo and Beau perfectly, don’t you think?

Our shoot models Emma and Gavin done a brilliant jobon the day, considering as well it was a long day they didn’t complain at all and don’t the pair of them look fab!

In terms of the flowers I wanted them to be bright and bold to work with the theme and decided to go for a multi-coloured pallet made up of mainly yellows, oranges and pinks with pops of red and purple and hints of foliage sprayed gold to add ‘glitz’ for the center pieces I wanted to co-ordinate with the styling of Bellaboo and Beau which was centralised around neon and decided to create something quite quirky. A glass bell jar filled with flowers and moss pots covered the length of the table with cutemini crab apples in red & some sprayed gold interspersed with moss accompanied Bellaboo and Beau’s cool mini neon bottles & gold tea lights.

My advice to couples looking for inspiration for their wedding would be, don’t be afraid of colour particularly if you’re having a winter wedding as the ‘glitz’ factor really can add that magic to your decor.

Here’s a behind the scenes snippet of what each amazing supplier bought to the shoot & what they wanted to achieve;

Make up and coordination of the shoot – Blush Makeup by Lucy Oldham; “Inspiration for the shoot was to be mix of Quirky, whimsical, dramatic and romantic. Billowing smoke, lots of sparkle, flair and pops of colour. The hair and makeup were inspired to have a 20′s Gatsby flair, with a modern twist and lots of sparkle. For the hair, I created a low soft chignon, with a sweeping fringe and accessorised with beaded diamante head scarves. The makeup was kept clean and fresh, with a dewy finish, smouldering eyes and a pop of red lip.”

Styling Bellaboo and Beau – Jenny Sinclair assisted by Leanne Benn; “When I saw inside of the Bell and the areas that we were able to use for the shoot, neon and glitter instantly came to mind. The stylish interiors consist of slightly industrial looking dark, raw wood including a sleeper style table, a neon light quote and metal railings. It sort of reminded me of a trendy London basement bar in the stable in particular so thoughts of disco lighting, smoke effects, glitter and sparkle would be great.  The odd spot of neon here and there and the combination of this, with the glitter, created an exciting display and cut through the darkness of the surrounding interiors. I created an array of bits, from neon-glitter backdrop mobiles to snow globe favours and little neon glowing glass vials for the table set and more. We wanted to create a look that would suit the upcoming festive period but not limit it so with the gold foil curtains, wall of light and glitter blowing shots, there is a christmassy feel there without it being obvious and conforming. This shoot was a great one to be involved with and gave us all a real opportunity to try something new and work with slightly more edgy ideas.”

Photography – Rebecca Douglas Photography assisted by Heather True; “With the exciting and strong colour palate of neon and gold my mind was racing with experimenting with light in such a quirky venue. I particularly wanted to play with creating some effects after dark so I set off sourcing some lighting and we used a smoke machine to add smouldering drama. Some fairy light curtains coupled with the gold metallic curtains added such a seasonal backdrop to the stunning table set up for a Deco Disco feast. I love working with real couples on styled shoots. Emma & Gavin have been together for 10 years and it was so lovely to create some space for them in the shoot to have some loved up fun and create some romantic images that couples planning their wedding can connect with.”

Dresses & accessories Froufrou Bridal Boutique;  “With a theme like Deco Disco we knew the dresses we chose needed an element of sparkle to them, some whimsical some elegant but ultimately glamorous and fabulous. So with a mix of designers Nicole Miller / Sarah Seven and Lusan Mandongus we knew these designs could hold their own amongst all things glittery and neon!”

Cakes: Vintage Rose Cupcakes – Alex Harding; “I was really inspired by the rustic feel of the venue and wanted to incorporate that feel in the cake design. Inspired by flora and fauna I hand designed both a beautiful rose teamed it with a succulent. The gold theme of the day was carried through with a stag silhouette on the top-tier of one of the cakes.”

Do you love the images from the shoot as much as we do? Any of you thinking of having neon incorporated into your big day? Its set to be a big trend in 2014, would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Joanne xx
