British Flowers Through the Year

In today’s post I am sharing with you some of my tips on how to start your own wedding and event floristry business. Starting with the first fundemental question you need to ask yourself.

This week is British Flowers Week! A celebaration of all the amazing flowers and growers we have right here in the UK! I thought what better way to mark the occassion then with a post showcasing British flowers through the year! All of the designs featured are made up soley of Brritish Flowers that are available throughout the different seasons.

Spring

One of my favourite seasons (along with Autumn) when nature comes bursting into life after laying dormant during the winter months! I adore seeing all the blossom on the trees, the wild bluebells growing abundently and the vast amount of different tulip varities available, like the beautiful pink fringed ones below. Oh and the Daffodil and Narcissus too, I particularly love ‘Replete’ with their soft peachy centres. Spring also brings with it one of my all time favourite flowers, Ranunculus! The ones featured below are from the wonderful Clowance Flowers along with the Daffodils. The Tulips, Centaurea and Geum were from Holwood Flower Farm.

Summer

Warm sunny days, picnics outdoors, cow parsley and wild flowers growing at the roadside, what’s not to love?! From late Spring until early summer is when the British growing season really kicks off and comes into its own. This was taken last summer at Blooming Green’s amazing flower farm, I mean just look at all those sweet peas growing behind me! It’s like a beautiful water colour painting! I’m also looking like the cat that got the cream with my bucket of gorgeous British blooms too. Summer also features two of my other all time favourite flowers (alongside Ranunculus) sweet peas (I could smell them all day long!) and garden roses! What is it I love about garden roses? Where do I start! Their scent, the array of gorgeous colours, their blousy ruffles are just so romantic too. Whilst I’m on the subject of roses USK Valley Roses specialise in British grown Roses along with the Real Flower Company. Do check them out if it is roses you want in particular.

Recently I found Jayne at Holwood Flower Farm based in Keston which is very local to myself. All of the flowers in the urn arrangement above are from her beautiful flower farm. I mean just look at those foxgloves and roses, if only I could include a heard eye emoji! I also discovered a new flower called Vebascum through her that I had never used before but am now in love it’s such a pretty flower. Feel very grateful to have found such a fabulous grower that is not a million miles from where I live.

Autumn

Oh Autumn, my other favourite season! I think the image of me below shows how happy I am to be back at Blooming Green with my stunning bucket of British blooms. I adore the colours of Autumn, the plums and burgundies, browns, burnt yellow and oranges. The textures too with the berries and grasses that come with the Autumn season. Dahlia’s are probably the stars of the show during the British growing season from late summer through until Autumn. I particularly love Cafe Au Lait (who doesn’t we have all swooned over them on Instagram and Pinterest). As well as Labyrinth with its beautul coral colour which features in some of my designs below.

This is possibly one of my all time favourite arrangements I have created, all the flowers are from the wonderful ladies at Blooming Green. I mean just look at the colour of those Sunflowers! Also the Creme Brulle Phlox, I’m utterly obsessed with the colour!

Winter

During the winter months of course there aren’t as many British flowers available due to the cold weather and frosts that we have. During the winter season it’s more about the evergreen foliages and berries with people wanting to create door wreaths and garlands for Christmas. Dried ingredients too such as twigs and bracken fern. The heros of winter for me which get me through those dark cold days are hellebores. The ones featured in the arrangement below are actually from my garden and I’m hoping to add a couple of more varities this year. I actually really love how the designs become more muted as it really reflects the season and what’s actually happening amongst nature itself. Looking through these images it really reflects the British Flowers through the year. The brighter more vibrant designs in the summer and then the rich burgundy/earthy shades of Autumn through to the muted wintry tones.

We designed a window insallation for Joy a few years ago in celebration of British flowers week, with flower meadows and hanging frames. Take a look on our events page if you would like to see what we created. So much hard work goes into growing flowers (working in my garden since lockdown and growing a few flowers from seed has given me a very small insight into this). I’m in complete awe of all the growers that manage to grow so many perfect stems successfully! I hope you have found this post about British flowers through the year inspiring. If you would like to find out more about British Flowers Week and how you could get involved check out the website.
