Our take on Gatsby for a private party in Greenwich

In today’s post I am sharing with you some of my tips on how to start your own wedding and event floristry business. Starting with the first fundemental question you need to ask yourself.

A couple of weeks ago we had the pleasure of doing our take on Gatsby for event flowers for a private party at The Trafalgar Tavern in Greenwich. The floral designs were made up of a mix of white and nude flowers, paired with gold vessels and pampas grass, which lends itself nicely to the extravagant style of the 1920’s whilst retaining a natural, modern feel. The stars of the show flower wise were (in my humble opinion), the white anemones with dark black centres. These really popped against the background of mixed foliage and tied in the colour black nicely to the overall scheme.

On the staircase we were really able to let loose creatively, as we were tasked to dress it with a full 9 metre long garland. This was made up of a mixture of lush, trailing foliage including berried ivy, soft ruscus and variegated ivy. This was paired with roses, anemones, soft nude-toned lisianthus and sweet smelling white sweet peas on the vine (which I am obsessed with at the moment!!), plus of course let’s not forget the pampas grass! The whole staircase took us a while to create and install, but it was a labour of love and worth every minute.

The pampas grass worked as a great alternative to feathers to bring a dramatic, decadent edge to the designs, while keeping the style natural and fresh. This, combined with the mixture of modern gold vases and tea lights, all worked to bring an updated feel to the Gatsby theme for these special event flowers. The sweet peas on the vine also added an extra level of indulgence by filling the room with a wonderful scent. Where possible we always like to bring in an element of scent in to our designs, as this is one of the key pleasures and benefits of fresh flower displays.

This hammered-effect, tall gold vase worked perfectly for the bar flowers, bringing some extra drama while guests ordered a cocktail (or two, or three!), while the distressed gold vases and tea lights that dressed the tables helped create an intimate, romantic atmosphere. This was carried through to the staircase as guests descended to the dance floor below, on a windowsill filled with trailing foliage and tall glass cylinders with floating candles.
